A Deeper Dig into an Elmbrook Board Member in Local Media
Board member was part of the Equity Non-Negotiables team; one of recommended readings was "How to be an Anti-Racist"
Elmbrook Board member, Mushir Hassan, and his actions on the board were discussed in local news 10/13/23 (starts 24:22):
Q: “How is [Mushir] influencing education in Brookfield? That's the big question. How is he influencing education in Brookfield? Is he influencing education by teaching or encouraging the teaching of modern geopolitics that condemns the West and condemns Israel and excuses Hamas as freedom fighters? That's what I would be concerned about as a Brookfield parent.”
A: "I can answer your question. Yes, because he was part of the Elmbrook equity team. He tried to usher in Equity Non-Negotiables. He wanted to further the impact of a group, ICS for Equity, whose founders are Critical Race Theorists, who push identity based education policy and he tried, he really tried to be a force to bring that forward in the Elmbrook school district, and one of the many controversial readings, one of the recommended readings: Ibram X. Kendi, 'How to Be An Anti-Racist.'"
As previously reported, Chris Thompson, Chief Strategy Officer for Elmbrook, told the Journal Sentinel on 5/28/21 via email, "We do not teach Critical Race Theory to our students nor train our staff on its tenets."
Yet, in the May 2021 Listening Session, the Board heard that CRT was referenced on 11/23/20 DEI Workgroup notes (which have now been made private) and the community has found examples of CRT in the schools and Board documents, often disguised under "Equity."
In March 2022, Elmbrook was highlighted nationally with a dive into our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Workgroup, teacher training and other district documents relating to equity.
